2024 OVGA Match Play Champions

The 2024 OVGA Match Play Championship took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 6th and 7th at host club Rockland Golf Club.  This invitation-only, elimination match-play event featured 31 of the region's best golfers, based on their competitive performances in previous OVGA events.  We were lucky that the heatwave of late July had passed in full, with perfect weather conditions on both days.

The morning of Day 1 started off with the opening rounds for the field of 15 Senior Men and 8 Women.  Round 1 resulted in some big upsets, including tenth-seed, Lyle Alexander, coming out on top against seventh-seed, Jimmy Crawford, and twelfth-seed, Stephane Racine, winning against fifth-seed, Norm Baird.  On the women’s side, we had sixth-seed Lucy Pouliot, emerge victorious against third-seed, Jenna Collins, in an intense 19-hole round.  

 
Round 2 for both the Senior Men and the Women took place in the afternoon of Day 1, along with Round 1 of the Men’s Division.  On the women’s side, we saw first-seed, Lise Jubinville, and second-seed, Teri De Luis, punch their tickets to the final round.  The Senior Men’s quarter-final round led to Peter Harrison, Lyle Alexander, and Perry Freda moving on to the semi-final round, alongside John Taylor who played a long 20-hole round against Dave Ross to advance.  In the Men’s Division, D.J. Robertson, Dwight Reinhart, and Samuel Kimmerly all advanced to the semi-final round, while Sébastien Deguire played a 20-hole match against Rick Latreille to claim the final spot in the Men’s semi-finals.

Day 2 kicked off with both Men’s and Senior Men's Divisions semi-final rounds.  After some very competitive play on Rockland’s East and West courses, three Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club members – Peter Harrison, Dwight Reinhart, and Sébastien Deguire – secured spots in the final rounds for their respective divisions, alongside eQuinelle Golf Club’s John Taylor. 

 
The final round of all three divisions was held on Wednesday afternoon.   All three final rounds were close calls, but all ended in regulation with underdog victories – fifth-seed, Dwight Reinhart, claimed victory on the 16th hole, third-seed, Peter Harrison, won on the 17th hole, and second-seed, Teri De Luis, won her round on the 18th.
