Optimist Club of Nepean Support of Junior Golf in Ottawa

The Optimist Club of Nepean is pleased to continue its support of the 2025 Ottawa Valley Golf Association’s (OVGA) junior golf development program and sponsorship of the OVGA Optimist Junior Spring Classic tournament on the first weekend in May. This collaborative endeavour has been ongoing for nearly two decades, and complements the many Optimist youth and community service programs and activities which it has supported since the Club’s formation in 1956.

Many young Ottawa and surrounding area golfers have benefited by participating in this competitive program, commencing with the OVGA Junior Spring Classic and culminating with the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships held in July each year in Florida.  An intermediate step along the way is an Optimist Central Ontario District-level qualifier, which is held near Toronto in June to advance to Florida.

About the Optimist Club of Nepean

The Optimist Club of Nepean is one of the remaining active English-speaking Optimist Clubs in the Ottawa Region, and was originally chartered as the Optimist Club of Carleton 1956.  It is part of Zone 10 (Eastern Ontario) within the Central Ontario District of Optimist International.

Over the years, as a prominent and primarily youth-oriented service club, it has successfully delivered most corporate Optimist International programs as well as important community service activities in the area. The association with junior golf development is but one of the more notable achievements.

The Optimist International organization, both in Canada and worldwide, has greatly evolved during this time and the furtherance of junior golf player development is no exception.  Some Optimist clubs conduct special golf qualifier rounds leading directly to entry in the Florida championship, while others, such as the Nepean Club, have three levels of competition:

  • the club-level tournament, which identifies players to move on to the District-level;
  • the District-level qualifier, to be held at the Caledon Golf Club (near Brampton and Toronto) in June;
  • after which the winning players have the opportunity to move on to the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships.
As mentioned above, the Optimist Club of Nepean (as well as many other Optimist Clubs) have provided financial support over the years to help defray the travel and accommodation expenses, as well as tournament fees of these golfers participating in the Golf Championship, affording them the opportunity to compete, have fun and make new friends with youth from various other countries around the world.
