Our member clubs have told us that their courses have wintered well and they expect very good conditions this year.
Your board has been very busy over the off-season. We have been working through the details on making fundamental changes to our governance and how we operate as a board.
Over the past few years, OVGA board members have spent much of their time in organizing and running individual tournaments. Being so involved in the day-to-day operations of the OVGA did not allow us the time to be as effective in our role as a board of directors responsible for the oversight and general direction of the OVGA.
A subcommittee reviewed our current practices and prepared a report with an eye on the future, and what would be required to make the OVGA more effective as an organization.
I am happy to tell you that the board made some important decisions over the winter which included creating the position of a Managing Director, who will report to the board. One of our board members, Jim Davidson has stepped away from the board to take on this role. He is now responsible for organizing and running all OVGA golf tournaments and other operational activities. We are fortunate to have him as our first managing director and know that he and his team will do a great job this year.
We also have three new board Members this year. Don Sweet (Hunt Club) is working with our sponsors and chairing our Year-End Gala - more details to come. JP Zubec (Rivermead) will chair the OVGA Governance Committee, and Rob Harvey (Public Player) is the OVGA Secretary-Treasurer.
Returning board members are:
Michael Renaud, (Royal Ottawa), President
Serge Lafontaine (Royal Ottawa), Vice President
Susan Veale (Calabogie), Intersectionals Chair
Sherry Thomson (Kanata), Communications Chair
Gord Lawson (Public Player), Handicap & Course Ratings Chair
Dru Lafave (Kanata), Past President
I would like to take a moment to recognize the contributions made by our past President, Dru Lafave. Dru has been a very active member of the OVGA in so many ways: as a board member, tournament director, president, co-chair of the Hall of Fame Committee, corporate sponsor of the OVGA Intersectionals and the OVGA Cup (through GOLFOMAX), and competitor. Dru guided the OVGA through competitive golf’s resurgence in the region and has set a solid foundation for the future. Thanks Dru!
